Ecological, sustainable, groundbreaking: the Bionorica headquarters

‘We do not wish to exploit nature, but to use its resources in a responsible manner. This is the principle on which Bionorica bases its operations and this approach should also be reflected in our headquarters’, states the Chairman of Bionorica, Prof. Michael Popp, on the company headquarters.

The demands on the company building acquired by Bionorica for its headquarters in July 2007 were high: firstly, its construction and the materials used for this purpose were to cause as little burden on the environment as possible and, secondly, the building must produce at least as much energy as it consumes. A reputable team headed by the architect leading the construction, Wolfgang Brummer, and Professor Michael Braungart, Director of the renowned Environmental Protection and Encouragement Agency (EPEA), were commissioned with the planning of the headquarters and realized a building project that is practically unrivalled to date in Germany.

With the aid of a complex alternative energy concept, all criteria were fulfilled that were required of a building that reflects Bionorica’s company philosophy. The construction is in close communion with nature thanks to its stable energy balance and thus reflects what comes naturally to the company: naturalness and sustainability.

The building was constructed using only materials that in their manufacture, use and recycling do not burden the environment. The building was planned such that no PVC was used at all. It is heated with a combined heat and power unit fired with renewable resources.

In order to ensure that Bionorica also produces as much energy as possible, high-tech solar technology is used. The roof and façade of the building are covered with solar cells of the newest generation. This means that sunlight is not only absorbed via the roof, but also by the entire shell of the building. To this end, the photovoltaic systems were integrated directly into the glass for the windows, which results in the roof of the building appearing semi-transparent.

Thanks to the modern technology used in these systems and the use of renewable resources, almost all of the production of heat and air-conditioning required for the Bionorica headquarters is carbon-neutral. The company thereby makes annual savings of around 1,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide when compared with fossil fuel use.
